Grace Julia Hidinger, age 91, a dedicated social worker in the city, passed away January 9 at Canterbury Place, Lawrenceville.
Hidinger (nee Edgar) was the youngest of eight children born to Alexander and Clara Edgar. A 75-year resident of her family's Alice Street homestead in the city's Bon Air neighborhood, she attended Carrick High School, graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1949 and was member of the Chi Omega Sorority there. Following a brief marriage to Truman Charles Hidinger, she took up her service career, working with the city's sick and disadvantaged through local and state welfare offices and for several years was a patient advocate at Mercy Hospital's pediatric cancer unit. For much of her life she was an active congregant of the Knoxville Presbyterian Church.
Following retirement, Hidinger relocated to Canterbury Place in 2002. She is survived by her daughter Ellen Hidinger Hugar Stanchak of Philadelphia, son-in-law John Stanchak of Philadelphia, niece Nancy Edgar Kamal of Montreal, Canada, niece Tonalee Edgar Frame of Long Valley, New Jersey, step-grandchildren Anna and Alex Stanchak of Philadelphia, Jesse Stanchak of Alexandria, Virginia, and Adam Stanchak of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, dear family friend Theresa Goodall of Bon Air, and many friends and staff members at Canterbury Place.
There will be a viewing and visitation at the Readshaw Funeral Home Inc. 1503 Brownsville Road, Pittsburgh, on Monday, January 14, from noon until 2:00 p.m., to be followed by a brief service there and internment at Jefferson Memorial Park, 401 Curry Hollow Road, Pittsburgh.
